Solving the Problem

In order to try and solve the inefficient process of finding a spot in parking garages, an idea that I decided to come up with is through an app called “Mark n’ Park”. This app (can be found on all smartphones) will already assign the driver a parking spot when they collect the ticket prior to entering the parking garage. The parking garage will have a built-in system that can detect which parking spots are available for the driver to station in. The system will also offer the available parking spots starting from the lower levels to the upper levels and choose the spots that are located closer to the elevators.
Once the driver parks at their designated spot, the individual downloads the “Mark n’ Park” app and inputs the parking spot location that they were given (e.g. 24C) and can go on to their next location. Not only does this allow the system to know which spots are available, but it also prevents the driver from forgetting the spot that they parked in. This would reduce the time spent looking for a place to park and the frustration that comes along with it when there are limited spaces.

  1. Hey Ilana,
I love this idea for a fast paced environment like the University of Florida. It is very efficient and can help in taking advantage of every parking spot in a parking garage, without someone circling trying to find if there is any spot even available. The only problem would be trying to get the parking areas that are owned by entities to come into agreement with this idea.

  2. Hi Ilana,
I think this is a really great idea with a lot of potential, another way I think you could apply it is to include the same system in the ticket kiosk of the parking garage. Maybe when you pull up to the garage you could pick your spot or get randomly assigned one and the system could keep track of how many spots are open because it would have that info already. Also you could sell the system to companies like Disney or even UF that have a lot of parking garages and would like to be able to track them.

  3. Hey Ilana, I think you're idea is amazing. I don't have a car here in Gainesville, so I don't understand the struggle of parking on campus. But in Miami, there are many malls that are an absolute nightmare. There are times where I will not find a parking spot anywhere near the part of the mall I need to enter, so I have to go to the other side of the mall which is at least a 5-7 minute walk back to where I need to go.
