Ilana's "Bug" List with Reflection

1.     During Career Showcase, the majority of companies only care to hire juniors and seniors for internships and don’t provide much opportunities for sophomores.
Reasoning behind it: Upperclassmen already declared their majors and completed the majority of the classes for their majors.
2.     Self-centered people that talk too much about themselves.
Reasoning behind it: They are insecure and have to do this in order to reassure themselves or they really just think so highly of themselves.
3.     When people do not hold the door so it just slams in my face or when people do not say “thank you” after I hold the door for them.
Reasoning behind it: They have not polished their manners or their mind was somewhere else.
4.     How expensive it is to shop in the Publix on 13th Street
Reasoning behind it: Publix is located on a main location and they know they can charge the prices that they can because they are located right next to the Standard (majority of the kids who live in this apartment complex are “well-off” and do not really blink an eye when it comes to pricing).
5.     People that question me too much about everything whether it be why I am dressed a certain way or why I do not feel like hanging out.
Reasoning behind it: They are probably just curious or concerned about my decisions.
6.     How quickly my phone battery dies.
Reasoning behind it: It is software related and apparently the “Location Services” on the IPhone drains the battery a lot. I also think Apple just manipulates and controls our phones so we have to end up buying new products.
7.     When there is traffic on the highway for no apparent reason and everybody decides to slow down.
Reasoning behind it: If there are enough cars on the highway, a minor interruption like a car braking, will cause a ripple effect and force other cars to slow down.
8.     When people ask me, “Where are you really from?” after I tell them that I am from Miami.
Reasoning behind it: They are just curious to know my ethnic background because they can tell I am of two mixed races. I understand they do not mean it in an ill-manner but the question could be worded slightly differently.
9.     When parents do not know how to handle their kids in public.
Reasoning behind it: They spoil their kids too much and let them do what they want too often that it would be odd for them to start reprimanding their children in front of other people.
10.  How everything in NYC is so expensive
Reasoning behind it: The rent is skyrocket high and it is a convenient location to live in with an immense number of businesses and people from all over the world.
11.  When I press my Home Touch ID button on my IPhone, and it still makes me type in my password.
Reasoning behind it: Apparently, the passcode is required to be typed if it has not been used to unlock the phone in the last six days. In my case, this is not true because I always end up having to type in my password each time I try using TouchID.
12.  When Google’s Gmail login accounts ask me for the last password I remembered using after I clicked “Forgot my Password”.
Reasoning behind it: I genuinely do not know why they ask this. My theory is that they want to see if you’re close enough to determine if you are the person whose account it belongs to.
13.  People that still continue to talk in the car when music is playing.
Reasoning behind this: They just want to have conversation and enjoy speaking to me but then they shouldn’t have music playing.
14.  Dealing with automated phone calls
Reasoning behind this: Companies and businesses do this because it is more efficient for the customer to be speaking with the correct person of the business
15.  When people automatically assume I speak Spanish so they start conversing in Spanish
Reasoning behind this: They probably do not speak English.
16.  Not being able to fall asleep even when I am really tired.
Reasoning behind this: I am stressed and have a lot on my mind so it’s difficult to just let myself fall in a peaceful state.
17.  People who use their phones while they are out eating or in a social setting.
Reasoning behind this: They have become so dependent on their technological devices that they do not know how to socialize and interact with others.
18.  When the Wifi does not work.
Reasoning behind this: There is slow internet connection in certain locations
19.  When I go to the library to study on the quiet floor and other people decide that it’s social hour and talk the whole time.
Reasoning behind this: They are avoiding responsibilities and go to the library to make it seem as if they are being productive.
20.  People who show up to class and end up being on their phone or watching Netflix during lecture.
Reasoning behind this: They think they can multitask and get both tasks done at the same time which is most likely impossible.

Reflection on “Bug List”

After naming the first five of my annoyances, I realized how difficult it was coming up with a longer list. I actually had to switch to another task before I could go back to creating my list because it was putting me in a flustered mood and I needed a break from trying to dig deep into my annoyances. Although this activity made me moodier, it made me appreciate how much more there is to life than these little “bugs”. When these annoyances become present at the moment, I sometimes let them get the best of me and allow them to trickle down throughout the rest of the day.  These annoyances only make up such a small portion of our lives yet we determine how much it will impact our decisions and way of living.

  1. Hi Ilana,
I can relate to your number 1 bug because I went to career showcase this year and most of the employers told me to come back when I'm a junior. I understand the reasoning behind it, but I wish that more employers would take sophomores for their internships. I also hate it when my WIFI doesn't work because I get very stressed when I’m cutting it close to a deadline and my WIFI stops working. I think you did a great job with your bug list overall!

  2. Hi Ilana,
I understand why you would be annoyed by the things you wrote about such as self centered people that talk too much and I was overall impressed by your bug list. Overall, I have found that most people have completely different things that bother them but I actually relate a lot to yours.
I also find it annoying when the wifi does not work and when people speak Spanish to me just because they assume I prefer that. I think you could improve your bug list by diversifying the themes of your points a little more. However, overall I think you did an awesome job:)
    Thanks

  3. Hi Ilana,
I completely agree with how expensive Publix is, they are very overpriced. Personally I think this is all Publixs, but I definitely see your argument for the one on 13th. I think Publix is more expensive than competitors because they market themselves as a better shopping experience so people are paying for more than just groceries. I guess some people like that but it annoys me as well. Good list!

  4. Hi Ilana,

I really liked your first bug regarding showcases and career fairs. There should be more opportunities for freshman and sophomores to gain experience. Just because a student is younger does not mean they shouldn't be afforded the opportunities granted to other students. "Age is no guarantee of efficiency" -- that quote was from Skyfall. I also agree that it is a bug when people are on their phone during a social setting because it takes away from the pleasure of conversation.
